Stage 1: 360-degrees to Believe in Your Brand

A new mind set for Career Success

Career Distinction: Stand Out by Building Your Brand (Wiley), by William Arruda and Kirsten Dixson, underscores how the word of work has changed forever. Job tenure is shrinking, organizations are changing more rapidly, employees are becoming more mobile (sometimes not by choice!), career-management tools of the past are being replaced with technology and social media. In Japan, where I live, “lifetime employment” is steadily disappearing forcing Japanese to rethink the meaning of job security in a culture where careers have always been static. Given this new economic landscape, careerists everywhere must take control of their careers and build demand for what makes them unique and distinctive. Essentially, a new mind set is required for career success and growth.

This new mind set starts with the belief that you are unique and distinctive. When we believe, we accept something as true or accept the statement of someone else as true. In personal branding a strong belief in your brand is essential before you can take action to become and be your brand.  To believe you need to combine self-analysis with feedback from others. Personal brand discovery requires comprehensive external data. Therefore, input from people who know you well will add tremendous clarity to your belief in your brand.

Assessing your Personal Brand

The best way to get the data that will differentiate you from others, is through the 360Reach personal branding assessment from Reach Personal Branding. 360Reach is the first and leading personal branding assessment designed by the global leader in personal branding. It is an automated tool that ensures qualitatively reliable data via 100% anonymous responses. 360Reach focuses on the positives, not specific objectives or weaknesses, and is actionable through coaching and personal development exercises. To ensure you get the greatest value from your results, a Reach-Certified Personal Branding Strategist can coach you through a 6-step analysis process.

The image I have for this stage in my personal branding process is of a “mountain stage” in cycling.  You go through the 360Reach process and work with a coach to climb the mountain.  Each turn in the road up the mountain represents one of the 6-steps in analyzing your brand.  By climbing through each turn you are closer to uncovering your brand and reaching the top of the mountain.  Once at the top,  you have established a firm belief in your brand, ready to spin down the mountain committed to become and be your brand.
