Picture this. You are at a networking event. Business cards in hand. Ready to make new contacts. How do you introduce yourself? What is your conversation starter?

What Will Your Legacy Be?

In the personal brand discovery process we talk about the importance of maximizing strengths. There are of course tools you can use to uncover your strengths including ‘Strengthsfinder 2.0′ and ’360Reach Personal Brand Assessment’. But another way to understand your strengths is through “forward-visioning” activities.

These activities help you to define your legacy – what you want to be known for. In other words, if people were to talk about you in the future either at a retirement party or in a newspaper or magazine cover story what would they say? Personal Brand ‘Mechanic’ Interview: Marsha Petrie Sue

“Don’t let people suck the life out of you!” says Marsha Petrie Sue

I came across Marsha’s website last Spring and knew I had to dub her one of my ‘mechanics’ of personal branding. Marsha is known as the Muhammad Ali of personal responsibility and leadership development. She can dance and look pretty, and she uses the entire ring, but she knows how and when to land a knockout punch! She is the author of Toxic People: Decontaminating difficult people without using weapons or duct tape, The Reactor Factor: How to handle difficult work situations without going nuclear and many other programs and books.

As a former Corporate Executive she understands that solid content and humor are the magical component of successful presentations. Her sense of humor comes out loud and clear in her interview and she certainly had me laughing a number of times.

In this interview, she offers some great sound bites that pack a punch including “Pay attention to how people brand you”, “Don’t let people suck the life out of you”, and “Take responsibility for your own marketing”. Marsha also covers her top 3 tips to take personal responsibility for your choices. For more information about Marsha, please visit her site MarshaPetrieSue.com or her blog DecontaminateToxicPeople.com

Branding ‘Me’ in a ‘We’ Culture Interview

I was pleased to recently be a guest on Rasheryl McCreary’s VoiceAmerica radio show, The Leader & The Muse – Ignite Your Brand. Increase Your Influence.

In this 1 hour interview Rasheryl and I explore the changing world of work that is requiring Japanese to shift into the concept and value of personal branding as a career builder. In this episode, I “bust” common cultural myths about personal branding in Japan and outline how on‐the‐move professionals in Japan can embrace personal branding and still honor the “we” while standing out and being “me.”
